Meet John

John Godwin is a fifth generation Floridian who has spent his professional career researching and advising local and national leaders. He currently works at MacDill Air Force Base as the Manager of Strategic Relations with a US intelligence program.

John has worked to empower and enfranchise populations in Tampa and around the world. He is an active foster parent, providing a safe home for our region’s most at-risk youth during one of the most tumultuous experiences of their lives. He has also volunteered hundreds of hours for our local schools, served the community on boards and commissions, and is active in the local Chamber of Commerce.

Family and Early Career

John has been married to his wife, Catherine, for 7 years and they have a 2-year-old son.

John earned his Bachelor’s from Auburn University’s Honors College and his Master’s from FSU, graduating with distinction. Paying his own way through school, he worked with the state of Florida…

One of the multiple jobs he worked during that time to pay his and Catherine’s way through school was with the state of Florida, where he was awarded the Prudential Davis Productivity Award for major innovations he delivered.

Upon graduating, John and Catherine moved to DC at the peak of the great recession—living on his cousin’s couch and maintaining 100-hour workweeks.

Career of Service

John interned for Senator Bill Nelson and worked for Madeleine Albright’s National Democratic Institute. He supported programs that helped empower and enfranchise marginalized and vulnerable populations in some of the most oppressive countries in the world; working with women, ethnic and religious minorities, LGBT populations, and persons with disabilities.

His work with marginalized populations put him on the radar of a US intelligence program, which recruited him to continue his efforts to empower and serve people, this time working on Syria.

His role in intelligence has evolved with global events, now working across programs focused on the most tumultuous conflict areas around the world to support members across our government and military.

Vision for Tampa

John knows that Tampa is at a crossroads, benefiting from exceptional growth but facing upcoming challenges because of that growth. Tampa’s next generation of elected representatives will need to bring energy and innovation to our city council—something John is ready to do from day one. John will bring a genuine passion for service to our city council and will work tirelessly to ensure that he serves as a voice for all residents of Tampa.
